Youngmin Kang

I walk, so I chew

Q. Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Hi, I'm Youngmin Kang, a contemporary artist who offers fresh perspectives by delving into various aspects of modern society.

Q. You've been boldly making various artworks, ranging from furniture to fashion. How would you define being a "contemporary artist"?

Being a contemporary artist means being sensitive to the current social and cultural landscape, creating and evolving art through various forms and subjects. Rather than adhering to conventional practice, I'm all about exploring the diversity and complexity of the current times. That's why I use various media and formats. I also embed social messages to raise awareness and evoke new prospects. Unlike the art of the past, I want to transcend the boundaries of art to redefine its role and value.

Q. Your upcycled furniture pieces from discarded plastic garnered global attention. What inspired you to focus on upcycling?

I wanted to shift our stances and be more conscious about environment and sustainability. By approaching objects from a different point, I could imbue a broader message than simply doing upcycling.

Q. How did you come about your recent experimental works, like the ear-shaped Air Pod Max case, AI THE BOX slippers, and pot clutch bag?

I experimented with various materials and forms out of curiosity and observation of everyday objects. Through these works, I sought to uncover mundane items' hidden potential and beauty, making the familiar seem unfamiliar to open new doors for the viewers.

Q. Where do you mainly draw inspiration from?

Everyday life, which is filled with objects and events I observe - a complex space loaded with various preconceptions and customs. I try to discover new angles on overlooked or taken-for-granted aspects, challenging established notions.

Q. All your pieces seem to spark conversation since they embody contemporary concerns or trends. Do you keep these aspects in mind while working?

Absolutely. I always strive to tell the story of the present. My works address numerous contemporary concerns/issues and ignite further discussions, tackling specific issues or trending items. It is to engage with the audience more by presenting diverse viewpoints on societal problems.

Q. What's your secret to constantly breaking stereotypes and boundaries?

I'd say the ability to welcome new experiences and inspirations. I push my boundaries in places, people, and perceptions because it's imperative to keep questioning and experimenting, asking why and challenging the conventional. By doing so, I break away from stereotypes and pioneer new viewpoints. Doubting fixated customs or ideas is one of the keys to artistic creation.

Q. Is there a message you want to convey through this work?

My artworks delve into the emotional, social, and cultural implications beyond the mere utility of objects, aiming to expand and shift viewers' perception. Through this, I hope to inspire them to broaden their context and make new discoveries in their daily lives, moving closer to freedom by transcending boundaries and exploring possibilities.

Q. Could you highlight some details/key features of this work?

If you look closely, you'll find the teeth and gums in the sole. Seeing irrelevant body parts on shoes would make you ponder the correlation between movements on your feet and the jaw. The shoe rack is also a sculptural piece that extends like chewing gum. By juxtaposing seemingly mismatched elements, we can discuss the potential more than the compatibility.

Q. Lastly, any words of encouragement or advice for those who keep marching for their dreams?

Our capabilities are unlimited. Try anything and constantly expand your boundaries - you'll eventually reach the goals you set for yourself.
